IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit one of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking) instead of the whole test. It is useful when three skills meet your target and one falls just short.

Who can take it

You need to meet all of these conditions:

  • You sat a full IELTS test on computer at a centre that offers One Skill Retake.
  • The retake is booked and taken within 60 days of your original test day.
  • You have not already used a retake for that full test. Each full test allows one retake only.

It is available for both IELTS Academic and General Training. Since March 2026 it is also available to Writing on Paper candidates, but the retake must be taken in the same mode as the original: if you handwrote your Writing, you retake Writing on paper.

What the retake is like

The retake has the same format and timing as that skill in the full test. You sit only that one section. A Speaking retake is still a face-to-face interview.

How results work

  • You get a new Test Report Form showing the retake score plus your other three scores from the original test, with an overall band worked out from those four.
  • You keep your original form too, and you choose which one to send. A lower retake score doesn't cancel your earlier result.
  • Results arrive within a few days.

Who accepts it

Each organisation decides for itself. IELTS reports acceptance by the governments of the UK (for computer tests in selected locations), Australia and New Zealand, among others. Universities and professional bodies vary, so ask yours before booking.

Is it worth it?

It usually makes sense when:

  • you missed your target in one skill by about half a band;
  • you know why it went wrong, such as running out of time in Reading or a weak Task 2;
  • you can practise that skill seriously before the 60-day window closes.

A retake is less useful if two or more skills are below target, or if your overall band is the problem. Use the rounding rule in IELTS band scores explained to see whether raising one skill by half a band lifts your overall score.

How to book

  1. Before booking your full test, confirm your centre offers One Skill Retake.
  2. Take the full test on computer and get your results.
  3. Book the retake for the skill you want through your test provider.
  4. Sit it within 60 days of your original test day.

Fees vary by country and are set by the test centre.
