Knowing the routine takes away a lot of stress. Exact procedures vary a little between centres, so always read the confirmation your test centre sends you.

Before the day

  • Check the date, time and address on your booking confirmation, including the Speaking time, which may be separate.
  • Make sure your ID is the same document you booked with and is still valid.
  • Plan your journey to arrive early. Late arrivals may not be admitted.
  • Sleep. A tired brain loses more marks than a missing vocabulary list.

What to bring

  • The ID you booked with (passport or national ID card).
  • A clear bottle of water, if your centre allows it.
  • Nothing else is needed. On the computer test the centre gives you pens or pencils and paper for notes.

What you cannot take in

Phones, smartwatches and other electronics, bags, wallets, keys, food and notes all go in a storage area before you enter the room. Switch your phone off completely. A device that rings or buzzes can get you removed from the test.

Check-in

  1. Staff check your ID.
  2. Your photo is taken. Some centres also take a fingerprint scan.
  3. You store your belongings.
  4. You are shown to your seat or computer. Your ID may be checked again in the room and at the Speaking interview.

The order of the test

Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one sitting, with no breaks between them:

SectionTime
ListeningAbout 30 minutes, plus 2 minutes to check answers
Reading60 minutes
Writing60 minutes
Speaking11 to 14 minutes, at a separate time

Before Listening there is a sound check, so make sure you can hear clearly and set the volume. If something goes wrong with your computer or headphones, raise your hand straight away. Don't try to fix it yourself.

The Speaking interview

  • You wait outside until you are called in.
  • The examiner checks your ID and starts the recording.
  • The interview has three parts and lasts 11 to 14 minutes.
  • The examiner won't tell you how you did. A neutral face is normal, not a bad sign.

After the test

  • Results for the computer test usually come within a few days. Your provider tells you when and how to view them.
  • If one skill is lower than you need, you may be able to retake only that skill. See One Skill Retake.
  • You can also ask for a remark of any skill through your test centre (a fee applies).

Questions people ask

What ID do I need for IELTS?

The same passport or national ID card you used when you booked. If you bring a different or expired document, you may not be allowed to sit the test.

Is the Speaking test on the same day?

Often, but not always. Depending on the centre, Speaking can be on the same day as the other sections or a few days before or after. Your booking confirmation gives the time.

Can I take water into the IELTS test room?

Many centres allow water in a clear, unlabelled bottle. Rules vary, so check with your centre.
